Truck Payload Reality Check

Enter your real numbers below. Then we’ll show where your setup actually lands.

Trailer Type
Use the payload number from your truck’s door sticker.
Truck Payload Rating is how much total weight your truck can carry in or on the truck itself.

That includes:
  • Passengers
  • Hitch weight
  • Pin or tongue weight from the trailer
  • Cargo in the cab or bed
You’ll usually find this on the driver-side door sticker.

Do not use tow rating here. Payload is the number that surprises people most often.
Use GVWR or your actual loaded trailer weight.
Trailer Weight should be your trailer’s real loaded weight if you know it.

If you do not know your actual loaded weight yet, use your trailer’s GVWR as a safer estimate.

Brochure “dry weight” is usually too low for real-world towing because it does not include your gear, water, propane, batteries, and upgrades.
Most real-world 5th wheel setups land closer to 22–26% when loaded.
Typical hitch hardware weight carried by the truck.
Hitch Weight is the weight of the hitch equipment installed on or in your truck.

For many 5th wheel hitches, this can land around 150–300 lbs.

Travel trailer weight-distribution hitches are often lighter, but they still count against payload.
Everyone riding in the truck.
Coolers, tools, generator, firewood, dogs, backpacks, and anything else riding in the truck.
Gear in Truck means anything riding in the truck that is not already counted elsewhere.

Common examples:
  • Tools
  • Coolers
  • Generator
  • Firewood
  • Dog supplies
  • Travel bags and storage bins
This number adds up fast, which is why payload disappears faster than people expect.
