8 RV Upgrades That Have the MOST Impact (RV Life Game-Changers!)

Starting fresh in a new RV gave us the perfect opportunity to install our must-have upgrades from day one. After three and a half years of full-time RV living, we knew exactly which eight upgrades had to happen immediately in our new Alliance Paradigm fifth wheel – before we could truly call this rig home.

These aren’t random upgrades we found online. These are the game-changers we identified from years of real-world experience. Some were non-negotiables for safety, others were comfort improvements we simply can’t live without, and a few were convenience upgrades that make daily RV life so much easier.

We’re showing you each upgrade and explaining why it made our priority list. Whether you’re setting up a new rig or improving your current one, these are the upgrades that actually make a difference.

Our 8 Essential RV Upgrades

RV TPMS1. Haloview Backup Camera & TPMS System – Safety First

When you’re pulling a 40-foot fifth wheel, having eyes on what’s behind you isn’t optional – it’s essential. The Haloview BT7 system combines a wireless backup camera with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) all in one screen, which means one less device cluttering up our dashboard.

We’ve used Haloview systems before and loved them so much that when we moved to our new rig, it was the first upgrade we installed. The system includes signal boosters (you’ll likely need them for longer rigs), and the installation is straightforward thanks to our Alliance Paradigm being pre-wired for a backup camera.

What sets this system apart is the integrated TPMS sensors that are incredibly easy to pair – just hit “autolearn” and screw on the sensor. The screen shows real-time tire pressure for all your tires, and there’s even a built-in microphone so you can communicate with someone helping you back up.

etrailer FlapJacks2. etrailer FlapJack Stabilizing Blocks – Engineering Meets Simplicity

Our old stabilizing blocks were crushed, scattered, and frankly embarrassing. When etrailer sent us their new FlapJack stabilizing blocks, we were skeptical about the magnetic design – but these things are brilliant.

Each block is rated for 6,000 pounds and they snap together like adult Legos using heavy-duty magnets. The setup is incredibly satisfying and surprisingly strong. After using them for several weeks, we can tell these will outlast any stabilizing blocks we’ve used before.

The FlapJacks come in a heavy-duty carrying case that keeps everything organized – no more hunting for loose blocks in your storage compartments.

FlapJack Update: After using them for a couple of weeks now, we’re completely sold. These things are incredibly easy to set up, but more importantly, they’re rock solid once in place. The build quality is impressive – we can already tell these are going to last way longer than any stabilizing blocks we’ve used before. etrailer.com has been a fantastic partner, and their customer service is superior, especially compared to Amazon sellers.

redodo lithium rv battery
3. Redodo Lithium Battery – Power Independence

Our new Alliance Paradigm came without house batteries (long story), so installing a Redodo 280 amp hour lithium battery was essential. Why 280 amp hours? Because we have a 12-volt refrigerator and love to boondock.

This battery could power our DC systems for five days straight even without solar input. The built-in low-temperature protection automatically stops charging below freezing to prevent damage, and the Bluetooth connectivity lets you monitor battery status from your phone.

Installation required some creativity – we had to work around a hole in the battery compartment with some “Jerry-rigging” until we could install a proper plywood platform. The battery comes with automotive-style terminals that are perfect for RV applications.

RV office RV desk setup4. Custom Office Setup – Working From Paradise

This might be our favorite upgrade. Instead of the standard sofa configuration, we had Alliance install a custom dual-desk setup (inspired by the Irene channel). Since we don’t have many visitors but definitely need functional workspaces, this was a no-brainer.

The key to our setup is the Huanuo monitor arms that allow us to move our dual monitors aside to enjoy the view when we’re parked somewhere scenic. We paired these with comfortable office chairs that have rubber casters to protect the flooring (learned that lesson the hard way in our previous RV).

Cable management is crucial in a small space, so we used cord keepers to minimize clutter behind the desks. We also installed under-desk keyboard trays that fit perfectly within the desk width and are designed to stay put during travel – no more keyboards sliding around while driving.

Beddys rv bedding
5. Beddy’s Bedding & Brooklyn Bedding Mattress – Sleep Game Changer

Making a bed in an RV, especially a wall-to-wall king size, is like a wrestling match. That’s where Beddy’s bedding becomes a game-changer. This zippered bedding system eliminates the daily struggle of making beds in tight spaces.

The bedding unzips to get in, zips up to make the bed in seconds, and the top section completely removes for easy washing while the fitted base stays in place. It’s genius engineering that solves a real RV problem.

We paired this with a Brooklyn Bedding RV mattress for the complete sleep upgrade. Good sleep is non-negotiable when you’re living in 300 square feet together.

Onnais Rv door lock
6. Onnais Keyless Door Lock – Security & Convenience

After trying multiple brands over three RVs, Onnais locks are hands-down the best. The build quality is exceptional – this thing is heavy and feels bulletproof. The number pad is laser-etched, so unlike cheaper brands, the numbers won’t wear off with regular use.

The system comes with two remotes that can control up to two doors, and here’s the clever part: the key is hidden inside the remote handle. So even if the battery dies, you’re never locked out.

Installation took about 45 minutes with their improved instructional videos. Pro tip: you’ll likely need to do some minor fitting adjustments with a box cutter to get the new lock to sit perfectly in place.

Lectric ebikes7. Lectric XP Lite Folding eBikes – Mobility Revolution

We traded our heavy Rad Power bikes for these ultra-light Lectric XP Lite folding eBikes, and it’s been a revelation. At around 40 pounds each (versus 70+ for our old bikes), these are light enough to easily lift in and out of the truck.

foldable ebikesThe folding design means no more strapping bikes in the garage or dealing with bike racks. These fold down compact enough to fit in most vehicle back seats, making them perfect for exploring places like historic Charleston where parking a big rig is impossible.

The lightweight design actually extends battery range compared to heavier eBikes, and we added accessories like phone holders and pannier bags for practical exploration and shopping trips.

8. Essential Accessories That Make a Difference

Don’t overlook the small stuff that makes daily life easier. We upgraded several accessories that might seem minor but have a real impact:

The Bottom Line

These eight upgrades transform an RV from a basic shelter into a comfortable, functional home. They’re based on real experience living this lifestyle full-time, not theoretical “nice to have” items.

The total investment might seem significant, but when you consider the safety, comfort, and convenience they provide day after day, they’re essential rather than optional. Plus, many of these upgrades will transfer to future RVs or add resale value.
