We thought we knew what to expect from Michigan, but this adventure completely caught us off guard! From travel day chaos to discovering the most peaceful luxury RV resort we’ve ever experienced, this trip reminded us why we love this unpredictable lifestyle.
When Travel Days Don’t Go As Planned
Memorial Day weekend brought us our first taste of what RV life really throws at you. Indiana’s roads were absolutely brutal – potholes everywhere had everything in our RV shifting around. The worst casualty? Our sink literally fell down, taking our dishes with it!
But that’s RV life for you. After almost three years of full-time living, we’ve learned that these mishaps are just part of the adventure. The key is rolling with it and making the best of every situation.
A Unique Harvest Hosts Discovery
Our overnight stop at Grissom Air Museum in Peru, Indiana turned out to be one of our most memorable Harvest Hosts experiences yet. There’s something surreal about parking your RV next to vintage aircraft! We arrived after hours and left before they opened, but we still made sure to support the museum by purchasing entry tickets.
Harvest Hosts continues to be one of our favorite ways to break up travel days with interesting, unique stops. From lavender farms to breweries to air museums, these stays create experiences you simply can’t get at regular campgrounds.

South Haven Michigan – A Waterfront Surprise
Here’s a mind-blowing fact: Michigan actually has 3,288 miles of shoreline – more than any other state except Alaska! The Great Lakes combined have almost 10,000 miles of shoreline, which is more than three times the combined coastlines of Hawaii, California, and Florida.
South Haven perfectly showcases why Michigan earned that incredible statistic. The iconic lighthouse has been guarding the entrance of the Black River for over 100 years, and the downtown Phoenix Street area is bustling with charming restaurants, unique shops, and local businesses.
Family Time and Farmers Market Fun
Having our daughter Sophia with us made this visit extra special. We spent hours exploring the South Haven Farmers Market – probably the most artisan market we’ve visited. From gluten-free macarons (a rare find for me!) to fresh rhubarb and local honey, this market had incredible variety.
Sophia and I also spent considerable time shopping along Phoenix Street. While there are plenty of touristy shops, we found some amazing local finds as well. The mix of waterfront beauty and small-town charm made South Haven an instant favorite.
When Weather Doesn’t Cooperate
Michigan weather had other plans for us! What started as a 52-degree day felt like 39 degrees with the wind by the water. We had to completely pivot our itinerary and skip the planned bike ride for a warmer day.
This is exactly why we recommend staying places longer rather than rushing through. When you only have a day or two somewhere, you can’t make up for weather delays. Having several days allowed us to come back when conditions were better.
Keeping Hugo Safe While We Explored
One of the challenges of RV travel with pets is ensuring they’re comfortable and safe when they can’t join you for certain activities. During our South Haven explorations and farmers market visits, Hugo had to stay back at the RV.
This is where our Waggle Pet Monitor became absolutely essential. We could check on him from anywhere, making sure he was comfortable while we discovered all those amazing local finds. With Michigan’s unpredictable weather – like that unexpected cold snap we experienced – knowing your furry family member is safe gives you complete peace of mind to fully enjoy your explorations.
The Waggle system offers incredible features that make it perfect for RV life:
- Pause feature – Perfect for part-timers who only need monitoring when traveling
- Instant alerts via email, text, and Apple Watch
- Built-in 4G cellular – Works anywhere, no WiFi needed
- 120-hour battery life for long-lasting peace of mind
- NEW 4G Mini with magnetic mount, 2-month battery, and solar power option (also great for monitoring your rig when you’re away!)
Don’t let worry about your pets keep you from discovering hidden gems like we found in Michigan. Get the peace of mind that lets you explore freely!

Virtue Cider – A Local Gem
Day two brought better weather and our visit to Virtue Cider. This award-winning cidery offers such a unique experience – we literally felt like we had our own private greenhouse! The outdoor area is expansive with games, chickens to visit, and that authentic farm atmosphere that you can only get by going off the beaten path.
The cider flights let us try a variety of their offerings, and the smoked salmon paté with gluten-free crackers was the perfect pairing. Places like this remind us why we love seeking out local experiences rather than just hitting the typical tourist spots.
Hidden Ponds RV Resort – An Unexpected Luxury Find
Now for the real surprise of this trip: Hidden Ponds RV Resort. I don’t usually do detailed RV park reviews, but this place was so exceptional that I couldn’t not share it with you.
What Makes Hidden Ponds Special
This relatively new resort is currently in phase one with about 70 full hookup spots, but here’s what sets it apart: there are no back-to-back spots. You’re either looking at woods or pond views, giving it a really nice state park feel without being packed in tight.
The location is perfect for exploring the coastal areas – less than 10 minutes to South Haven and within 20-40 minutes of other coastal towns like Holland. Grand Rapids is about 45 minutes away, making this an ideal home base for the region.
Unique Amenities We Haven’t Seen Elsewhere
Hidden Ponds has some amenities I’ve never encountered at other RV parks:
Five Fitness Stations: Throughout the property, you can walk to different exercise stations for sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, and more. While we didn’t see anyone using them (most RVers have their own fitness equipment), it’s a thoughtful addition.
Dedicated Mail House: As full-timers, we love that they have a secure, 24/7 accessible room for package deliveries. No worrying about packages sitting outside or getting wet.
Honest Communication: Their signage shows a great sense of humor and realistic expectations. One sign reads: “If you must whine, please make it a Malbec and share with your neighbor.” Another states: “To be candid, if you want perfection or a golf course setting, Hidden Ponds is not for you. But if you want peaceful, clean, and spacious nature, then this is a great place to start.”
Additional Amenities
- Bocce ball and pickleball courts
- Awesome clubhouse with fire pit, big table, cornhole, and games for kids
- Pool area (though it was too cold during our June visit!)
- Really nice shower facilities
- Laundry facility (takes about 3 hours per load, $5 donation to local charity)
- Multiple ponds with scenic views
- Great playground for little ones
- Some rental cottages available for visiting family

Practical Information
Our corner spot (#204) gave us tons of room and privacy. We loved being on the concrete pad with the provided fire pit and table. Rates run from about $79-90+ depending on the season, with seasonal spots being very affordable. Given that this is a tourist destination area, many other RV parks charge even more than this for similar amenities.
Important tip: When entering, there’s a five-point roundabout that will want you to make a sharp right turn. Don’t attempt it – go all the way around the circle and come back to that exit. It’s the only safe way to make that turn with an RV.
Budget-conscious alternative: If cost is a primary concern, there are nearby state parks like Van Buren State Park and Warren Dunes that offer cheaper options with partial hookups. However, you’ll sacrifice the luxury amenities and convenience that make Hidden Ponds special – everything you need (restaurants, Walmart, hardware stores) is within five minutes, versus being farther from services at the state parks.
Why This Trip Reminded Us Why We Love RV Life
Moments like these remind us exactly why we took the leap into this lifestyle. Sure, things don’t always go according to plan – sinks fall, weather changes everything, travel days test your patience. But then you discover places that take your breath away and create memories you’ll treasure forever.
Michigan keeps surprising us in the best ways possible! From luxury campgrounds to charming lakefront towns like South Haven, this state has so much more to offer than we ever imagined. While everyone talks about the Upper Peninsula’s natural beauty (and rightfully so), southwestern Michigan deserves just as much attention.
Planning Your Own Michigan RV Adventure
If you’re considering your own Michigan RV adventure, here are our recommendations:
- Stay longer – Give yourself several days to handle weather changes and fully explore
- Consider Hidden Ponds as your base for coastal exploration
- Don’t miss South Haven – the waterfront, farmers market, and Phoenix Street shopping
- Build in Harvest Hosts stops for unique overnight experiences
- Have backup plans for weather-dependent activities
Whether you’re dreaming of full-time RV living or planning your next adventure, don’t wait. Life’s too short to keep putting off the experiences that call to your heart.
