RV Living: 7 Misconceptions About Boondocking Off Grid with No Hookups

Is Boondocking Off Grid Really Worth the Hassle?

When we first started our RV journey, we had zero intention of boondocking. We thought we’d be surfing campgrounds for the rest of our RV lives. But once we discovered the joys of boondocking, we realized it’s absolutely worth it! Sure, there are some adjustments to make:

  • Water management: We have a whole other video with tips on this, but you just need to get really good at rationing water. No long hot showers, water conserving shower heads, no water running while brushing teeth or washing dishes… you get the idea.

Go here to learn how to use a water bladder to refill your fresh water tanks.

More boondocking tips for water and waste conservation.

  • Waste management: We use a portable tote to dump our tanks about once a week. See how here.
  • Power management: With our solar setup and generator, we rarely have issues.

But the benefits far outweigh these minor inconveniences. The peace, space, and freedom we experience while boondocking are unmatched. Plus, the money we save on campground fees more than makes up for any extra effort.

Can You Actually Boondock with a Big Rig?

Absolutely! We’re living proof that you can boondock with a large RV. Our 44-foot rig has never held us back from finding amazing boondocking spots. Here’s how we make it work:

  • Research: We scout locations beforehand, either by e-bike or car. This ensures we can safely drive down the road and fit into spots
  • Take it slow: We’re not afraid to drive very slowly on unpaved roads.
  • Be flexible: Sometimes we have to turn around if a spot doesn’t work out. Have a B & C backup plan.

We use resources like Campendium, iOverlander and RV Life Trip Wizard to find suitable spots for our size. Facebook boondocking groups are also invaluable for up-to-date information. For example, we’re currently boondocking near Buena Vista, Colorado, in a beautiful mountain setting. We drove about 10 minutes down an unpaved road to get here. It takes a little extra effort, but the payoff is worth it!

How Much Does It Really Cost to Start Boondocking?

One of the biggest misconceptions about boondocking is that it requires a huge upfront investment. While there are costs involved, they’re not as high as you might think:

  • Batteries: We use Redodo brand batteries, which are much more affordable than some popular brands. Get a HUGE extra discount when you use this link and the code LIKE at checkout.
  • Inverter: We went with a Victron inverter, but there are options for various budgets.
  • Generator: Our dual-fuel Cummins generator cost around $1,200 and has been a great investment.
  • Solar: We have about 1,500 watts of solar panels on our roof. See our solar video for all the details.

Remember, you don’t need to buy everything at once. Start with the basics and upgrade as you go. The money you save on campground fees will help offset these costs over time.

Is It Possible to Stay Connected While Boondocking Off Grid?

Contrary to popular belief, staying connected while boondocking is very doable. We’ve rarely had issues with connectivity, and here’s why:

  • Research: We always check reviews for cell signal information before choosing a spot.
  • Multiple options: We use a combination of cell data and Starlink for reliable internet.
  • Elevation: We have never had issue with Starlink at high elevation. As long as we have open sky, we are golden.
  • Check cell coverage maps: We always consult cell coverage maps for different carriers before heading to a new area.

For example, we’re currently at 8,200 feet elevation and have no problem with our internet connection. Don’t let connectivity fears keep you from experiencing the joys of boondocking!

Are You Really Safe When RV Living with No Hookups?

Safety is a common concern for potential boondockers, but in our experience, it’s not a significant issue. Here’s our take:

  • Crime is rare: It’s actually more likely to encounter crime in urban areas or RV parks. Bad guys are not going to randomly drive into the boonies to get you or rob you.
  • Be prepared: We have Hugo, our 80-pound dog, and we take some basic security measures like locking everything up, putting the generator inside if we are leaving for the day, always locking bikes up etc.
  • Weather awareness: The bigger safety concern is often weather-related. Always check forecasts and be prepared to move if necessary. Rain can equal washes which can destroy your way out.

While it’s good to be cautious, don’t let unfounded fears keep you from enjoying the boondocking lifestyle.

One of the best things about boondocking is that you can choose to be as social or solitary as you like. We’ve had amazing experiences both ways:

  • Group boondocking: We’ve met up with friends and boondocks together, sharing meals and campfires. So fun!
  • Community events: Join us at the upcoming Romp It Up event in Sonoita, Arizona! It’s a great way to meet fellow RVers and enjoy music, art, and excursions together. October 30-Nov 3, 2024

Boondocking doesn’t have to mean isolation. It’s a great way to build community on your own terms.
